Immergée depuis peu dans l’univers multiculturel de la formation Linguistique dans cette ville cosmopolite qu’est Genève, j’avais envie de vous parler de ce que nos amis américains célèbrent ce jour : Thanksgiving !
4 femmes ont répondu à mon appel, 2 américaines, une vivant ici en Suisse, une dans le Tennessee, une Canadienne vivant à Québec et une Française ayant vécu 3 ans à Nashville.

Do you celebrate Thanksgiving in your country? If so, how and why?
Yes, we do. I have to say that in the US, we consider Thanksgiving one of the most important national holidays because it reunites families and friends. On this day, we express gratitude and feel closer to one another, regardless of our religious beliefs.
In America, it is a cultural holiday that symbolizes peace, thankfulness and the beginning of the holiday season.
We celebrate it on the fourth Thursday in November, as a way to commemorate the harvest feast that was shared by the colonial Pilgrims and Native Americans in 1621.
This year, we’ll be having a big feast at our friend's house here in Geneva, with all the traditional Thanksgiving dishes!
What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?
My favorite Thanksgiving food is the turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy and the desserts that follow, which are usually pumpkin or pecan pie.
What does "Thanksgiving" mean to you?
It’s a time to gather with our loved ones and give thanks for everything we have. When I was a child, we had to write down what we were thankful for and share it with everyone at dinner. It was a nice way to remind us all how important gratitude can be in our lives.
What is your favorite Thanksgiving memory?
My favorite memory is when my family and I went down to 6th Avenue in Manhattan to watch the Thanksgiving Day parade, which is famous for its incredible floats.”

"What is your favorite dish for Thanksgiving? Stuffing!
I love the stuffing. Some people call it “dressing”. I do not actually know the difference.
What do you typically have?
We typically have all the “traditional” items; Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes with gravy, green bean casserole, rolls and desserts. Pumpkin and pecan pie are always at our Thanksgiving dinners.
What thanksgiving means for you?
I am embarrassed to admit but the real meaning has gotten lost amongst all the excitement, food, and entertaining. For me it’s about gathering with family, traveling to see family or hosting family at my home, eating more in 1 meal than I typically eat in 2 days, and kicking off the Christmas season.
What things are you usually thankful for?
Always my family and friends, my health, my career and my good fortune of living where/how I do.
What do you traditionally do for Thanksgiving in your family?
My siblings and I travel with our families to spend the holiday together. We spend time outdoors, catching up, taking lots of pictures, playing games, drinking alcohol, discuss upcoming Christmas plans and go Christmas shopping (either late Thanksgiving evening or Friday, which is called “Black Friday”).
This year my siblings, their families and my parents are coming to stay at my house with my family and I. We are going to the Predators Hockey game Wednesday night, celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday and shopping on Friday. "

Au Canada, Thanksgiving est célébré en octobre et c'est aussi un joli moment de partage,
Action de Grâce pour moi c’est le temps d’apprécier la famille, les amis, la nature, la vie avec ses bons moments doux et simples. Ce n’est rien faire et c’est ok.

Pour notre française, qui a vécu là-bas, la même description... Un moment de retrouvailles en famille, un moment de relâche où on retrouve ses proches, où on profite ensemble du début des vacances pour partager et remercier autour d'une dinde bien farcie certes !!
"La dinde ! Elle doit être énorme et cuire longtemps et est meilleure « stuffed », farcie !"
L'avantage de vivre aussi aux USA quand on n'est pas américain à cette période est de profiter du pays avec un peu moins de touristes américains !!
Quel est votre souvenir de Thanksgiving préféré ?
Ça reste La Floride en 2018. C’était tellement beau et festif. Les américains restent en famille souvent, donc il n’y avait pas trop de touristes, un bon plan pour nous les Voyageurs !
